Possible Procedures Before Getting Dental Implants

Model of bone grafting for a dental implantAre you ready to join more than 500,000 Americans who are choosing dental implants this year? You’re making a wise investment. A dental implant is unique because it replaces the entire tooth structure, not just the portion above the gum line. This requires a multi-step treatment process that can take many months; however, your results may last for a lifetime. Before getting started with your placement surgery, it’s not unusual to require a little prep work. Here are a few possible procedures you may need before getting dental implants.

Tooth Extractions

Dentists strive to preserve every natural tooth, but extractions can be the best choice for some patients. If a tooth is severely damaged, or you have severe overcrowding, they may recommend removing the tooth. It can also be more cost-effective to remove a few remaining teeth if you’ve suffered extensive tooth loss. Instead of preserving your teeth, it will make room for implant dentures.

Gum Disease Therapy

Your mouth must be healthy before getting dental implants. With at least 50% of adults in the US having a form of gum disease, it’s not unusual to require gum disease therapy before getting dental implants. Your dentist will create a personalized plan to stop the infection and restore your gum health.

You must commit to good oral hygiene after getting your new teeth to prevent peri-implantitis, which is like gum disease and a leading cause of dental implant failure.

Bone Grafting

A strong, healthy jawbone is the foundation for successful dental implants. Your dentist will insert a titanium post into your jaw to serve as a new tooth root. Your jaw must fuse to the implant through a process called osseointegration.

Many people with tooth loss have also lost density in their jaws. You can lose up to 25% of your jaw’s density within the first year of missing a tooth because it is not being stimulated by the root.

Bone grafting is often necessary before getting dental implants. Your dentist will use your own bone or that of a donor to strengthen weak areas of your jaw.

Sinus Augmentation

A sinus augmentation, also known as a sinus lift, is often used along with bone grafting. If there is not enough bone surrounding your maxillary sinuses, dental implants can protrude into your sinus cavities.

A sinus augmentation will lift your sinuses and a bone graft will add height to ensure there’s enough room to place upper dental implants.

Your dentist will determine if you require any preparatory procedures during your consultation for dental implants. Although additional procedures may add more steps to your treatment plan, it is time well-spent to ensure your new smile succeeds.
