Dental Sealants Chesterfield

Stop Cavities Before They Start

Did you know that the vast majority of people get at least one dental cavity in their lifetime? In fact, many people get more than that! Given how common this problem is, it makes sense to do everything in our power to prevent cavities from forming! That is why our Chesterfield team is pleased to offer dental sealants for patients of all ages. Continue reading below to learn more about this simple preventive service.

What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a thin coating, made of a biocompatible plastic material, that we apply to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. Its job is to interfere with the process that causes cavities.

Cavities form when bacteria in the mouth interact with sugars and starches, leading to the formation of plaque, an acidic biofilm. Sealants place a thin barrier on the teeth, which prevents food particles from getting stuck on them. In turn, this means that plaque cannot form and no cavities occur!

How Are Dental Sealants Placed?

The process of placing dental sealants is painless and non-invasive. Here is an overview of how it works:

  • First, we make sure your teeth are clean.
  • Next, we apply a mild acidic solution to etch the teeth. This roughens their surface so the sealant adheres more easily.
  • We then use a small brush to “paint” the sealant onto the teeth. A special light hardens it within a matter of seconds.
  • You should wait at least 30 minutes before eating, and you should avoid sticky, hard, and crunchy foods for a few hours so the seals can set properly.

At first, you might notice a slight difference in how your teeth feel. However, after a brief adjustment period, you may forget that your sealants are even there! The lifespan of sealants can vary, but in some cases, they last for several years. We will inspect them during your checkups and let you know when we recommend replacement.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are often recommended for children who are just getting their permanent teeth. Since kids are still learning how to take care of their oral health, sealants can provide a valuable layer of protection against decay.

However, kids are not the only people who can benefit from sealants. You might consider getting them if:

  • You have deep grooves in your teeth.
  • Your teeth are naturally brittle or prone to cavities.
  • You have a medical condition that causes chronic dry mouth.
  • Your teeth show early signs of decay, or you have a history of cavities.

Sealants can also be an excellent option for adults with special needs who cannot thoroughly clean their teeth due to a mental or physical disability.

If you believe you or someone in your family should get sealants, feel free to bring the matter up with our team!
