When Are Invisalign Refinements Necessary?

Invisalign offers predictable results, but complications can arise for some patients, which is why it’s important to check in with your provider every few weeks. While monitoring your treatment’s progression, they might find your teeth aren’t moving as anticipated. Therefore, they may recommend Invisalign refinements. Although it may add additional steps to your treatment plan, here’s why it’s time well-spent to ensure the best results.

What Are Invisalign Refinements?

Your dentist uses advanced technology to create a series of aligners. Each aligner provides gentle pressure to specific teeth to move them in small increments. Generally, complying with your dentist’s instructions allows you to finish your aligners in about 12 months, depending on the complexity of your case.

However, teeth may not move as quickly as anticipated for various reasons, like not wearing your aligners for 22 hours per day or teeth not moving as predicted. Your cosmetic dentist may then recommend refinements. These are extra aligners worn in between those you’ve already been given to get your treatment plan back on track. Although it will require extra trays, they are necessary to create a healthy, straight smile.

How to Prevent Needing Refinements

Not everyone requires Invisalign refinements. You can lessen your risk of needing modifications by complying with your treatment plan, which includes:

  • Wear Your Aligners As Instructed: You must wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day. As a general rule, only remove them when eating or drinking anything except water. Take them out when brushing and flossing, but don’t forget to clean your aligners too.
  • Switch Your Aligners on Time: Your cosmetic dentist will instruct you to switch your aligners every 1-2 weeks, depending on your needs. Switching too soon or skipping a set can cause your teeth to move too quickly. However, swapping your aligners too late can add delays to your timeline.
  • Maintain Your Check-In Appointments: Check in with your dentist regularly. They’ll keep an eye on your tooth movements to guarantee the best results.

Don’t fret if your dentist recommends Invisalign refinements. You will have confidence knowing that your teeth are being moved into their correct positions.
